Why 44mm label rolls can cause feeding problems—and what to check

Royal Mail currently lists its 152 × 102mm thermal label roll with a 44mm internal core. In some desktop thermal printers, that larger opening allows the roll to sit lower on the spindle than the smaller-core roll used previously.

What changes inside the printer?

The labels themselves can still be the correct 6×4 size. The problem is mechanical: when the centre opening is larger, the spindle has more room inside the roll. Depending on the printer’s internal clearance, the outside of a full roll can then rest against or rub on the base.

That extra resistance may show up as uneven feeding, labels stopping part-way through the roll, or more waste during dispatch. It does not affect every printer, roll or setup in the same way.

Four checks before buying anything

1. Confirm the roll: check that it is the correct label size and approximately 44mm across the internal core.
2. Check the exact printer model: similar-looking printers can have different spindle and internal dimensions.
3. Look for contact: with the printer switched off, check whether a full roll touches the inner base.
4. Rule out setup issues: inspect the label path, guides, sensor position and driver or template settings.

How a core adapter helps

A correctly sized adapter reduces the gap between the printer spindle and the roll core. This supports the roll higher on the spindle and can lift its outer edge clear of the printer base. The printer is not modified, and the adapters can be removed when they are not needed.

What if your printer is not listed?

Send the make and exact model, clear photographs of the spindle and roll compartment, and any measurements requested. If the model has potential to become a standard RollFix variant, a development test may be considered.
